Small city park with a large open grassy field
How long is the trail?
The paved path around the park is approximately 0.6 miles.
How difficult is it?
Highlights: large grassy fields; short nature trail along the creek; paved walkway; crowded during nice days; pond overlook area; lots of ducks and geese (please do not feed them human food!); disc golf park
About the park: The approximately 40 acres of area makes this park one of the most popular parks in Yakima. It is large enough to have a basketball court, a children's playground, a few picnic shelters, a duck pond observation deck, and a disc golf park. The north end of the park leads to a short nature trail along the creek. You will have to walk through the concrete bridge to get to the nature trail. The park has undergone some significant renovation over the past several years, thanks to some of the large funding from local businesses and citizens. The entire walkway loop around the park is approximately three-quarters of a mile.
Getting there: This park sits off of 48th Avenue closer to the Nob Hill Blvd intersection. The parking lot is big and you should not have any issues finding a spot. The busiest time is the evening when people get off work.
Our experience: Both of our dogs love this park. They seem to enjoy an occasional on-leash walk, and this park provides a perfect opportunity for that. We usually use this as a supplemental walk after their play time at the dog park which is right across the creek. People seem to not visit this park as much during the winter months. We had a snow day with Bogo here and he absolutely enjoyed it (even though he needed a jacket- it was freezing!!)
The fall and the springtime is the best to visit the park. There are plenty of people and dogs- all having a good time. Besides, it looks beautiful when the sun is out. The walk is pretty easy and we usually do a few loops. As we mentioned before, there is a short nature trail that you might want to explore. Bogo loves that area because he enjoys smelling things (mostly, rotten and stinky things!). The water in the pond and the creek seems to have a lot of algae and sometimes the smell of that is overwhelming. If your dog is a roller, you might want to avoid that area!
If you live in the area or simply passing by Yakima and want an excuse to stretch your legs (and your dog's legs!), check out this park and the adjacent dog park.
