Updated: Jun 21, 2023

Multi-use trails for dogs, horses, and bikers through woods and marshlands

How long is the trail?

2.5 miles to 15 miles. Trail length varies because there are multiple connector trails.

How difficult is it?

Highlights: multiple trail connectors; you can "get lost" for a while because the trail system is extensive; mostly flat; beware of bikes!

About the trail: Farmdale Reservoir is a beautiful park located in Washington, IL, which offers an excellent opportunity for hiking, walking, jogging, and biking. The park has a large body of water, which is perfect for fishing and boating. The park also has multiple trail options, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers. There are trails that offer different levels of difficulty, so everyone can find something to enjoy. The trails are fairly easy. Since there are multiple connector trails, you can walk forever- about 15 miles in total length (follow the signs). This trail is primarily used for biking so be careful with your dogs. There are a few trails where bikes are prohibited. The park is also dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry friend along for the adventure. Keep in mind that there are some bike trails where dogs aren't allowed, so be sure to check the trail maps.

Getting there:

Farmdale Reservoir is located at 20026 N. Farmdale Road, Washington, IL 61571. To get there from the north or south, take I-74 and exit at Route 24. Head east for about 2 miles and then turn right on Farmdale Road. Follow Farmdale Road for approximately 1.5 miles, and you will see the entrance to the park on your left.

Our experience: The trails at Farmdale Reservoir are primarily used as a bike trail and a few bike races are hosted at this location every year. Be careful if you are walking your dogs here since you encounter people on bikes. There are a few parts of the trails that are closed to bikes, so make use of those. Our dogs enjoyed being off-leash here once we deviated from the bike path. We came across vast grassy fields (swampy, at times) and there was plenty for the dogs to sniff around. Very peaceful trail!
