Double Bluff Beach and Off-leash Area, Whidbey Island, WA

Updated: Mar 18, 2021

Beautiful off-leash area on the western tip of Whidbey Island

Highlights: large off-leash area; less crowded; beautiful views of the mountain and the ocean; plenty for dogs to smell; located in the quieter area of the island

About the beach: The beach was opened in June, 1999 and lays on the bottom of the very steep double bluffs overseeing the ocean. The entire beach is approximately 2 mile long but the off-leash area only starts about 500 feet to the right of the parking lot. There are signs on a flagpole that indicates the start of the off-leash area.

Getting there: The GPS will take you to the parking lot, which is at the end of the street. It is near a residential area, so be mindful of the private property in the surrounding areas as you enter. The parking lot is quite small, but we've never had problems finding a spot to park. Not all of the beach is dog-friendly, but there are clear signs that points towards the off-leash area. Just follow the walkway to the right of the parking lot and you will see the signs.

Our experience: This place is by far the best off-leash area for your dog. It has everything your dog would need to have a great experience. Bogo loves this place every time we take him here. The driftwoods, sea weeds, and the occasional dead fish and crabs gives him plenty to smell and explore. He's always loved to explore his senses, so he'd always walk towards the bluffs rather than the water and get "lost" in the moment- and he loves that!

Besides, the dogs that visit the beach always seems to be friendly and happy, which make the visit even better for Bogo. He loves to meet new dogs and make friends. Running on the sandy beach is one of his favorite things to do- so he would not miss the opportunity to run if someone is willing to chase him!

Besides , the view is breathtaking- on a clear sky, you will be able to see the mountain in the distance. That is part of the reason we love this place too. The entire Whidbey Island is beautiful, but this beach is much quieter that makes the walk along the beach worthwhile. If you are lucky, you might be able to spot some marine wildlife too! If you are in the area, come by and give your dogs some off-leash freedom! As always, please make sure to pick up after your dogs.

We've seen a few dead fish and crabs in the beach. So, if your dog likes to roll on gross things, they will probably try to (our dog, Bogo, has rolled on dead stuffs here, unfortunately!) Besides that, we have nothing to complain about this beach!

All in all, because of the number of things to smell and explore, your dogs will love this place. You will love it too!
